I’m pleased to announce that three Wonderful Machine photographers are listed among the winners of this year’s Graphis Photography Annual. Sang Photography, Kah Poon and Stephanie Diani were chosen among 2012′s 100 Best In Photography and will be showcased in the print magazine. Congratulations to all the winners! You can review the entire 100 list on Graphis’ website. Below are the winning Wonderful Machine photos and a little information about each image from the photographer:
Sang Photography / Canada
I wanted to shoot something that’s memorable and has timeless beauty and yet has the feel of boldness. Something rich in shadows and colors. Orchids, I thought, would convey that feeling and placing it against the blue and black backgrounds with strong shadows gave the orchids the rich texture and colors I wanted. I wanted something different with an edge and love the strong contrasting results that came out.

Kah Poon / New York
This shoot was published in ‘And Men’ magazine. I set out to shoot something creative, stark, and daringly styled. I used androgynous male models who could be styled to the point of femininity yet retain a great measure of masculine strength. I wanted dynamic movement in full makeup, hair, and clothes. The models were to be given the same care and attention to detail as if it were a women’s fashion shoot. This project’s goal was to give men’s fashion it’s own unique character and uninhibited artistic expression, like women’s wear so commonly does. I wanted to create an exuberant and artistic fashion editorial for mens’ style magazines.
Stephanie Diani / Los Angeles
This shot was from a portrait session with singer/songwriter Jessie Malakouti and makeup artist Julie Murray in 2011. Malakouti was in the process of building buzz for her new band, Jessie and the Toy Boys, in which her back-up singers are mannequins. So one of the ideas that I proposed was something along the lines of the cross-legged Brigitte Bardot photograph, but with a hint of one of her new “bandmates.” She had wanted to include a mannequin and liked the idea; she ended up using a different shot from the same session for promotional postcards and band laminates at South by Southwest.
