Four years ago, photographer Douglas Sonders stared his own production company, 8112 Studios. They originally offered basic video services to Douglas’ still clients, but over the years the studio has grown into a full fledged motion company producing commercials, music videos, corporate films, and documentaries. 8112 Studio has brought in large motion client base for Douglas with the studio’s latest job came from Tier10 Marketing: a commercial featuring Yankees player Mariano Rivera for the luxury car company, Acura.

Behind the scenes
This was an exciting assignment for Douglas, not only because he loves cars, but “especially since the star is one of history’s most talented closers in baseball history.” He calls the project a true “dream job.” So, once receiving the assignment and reviewing the storyboard with Tier10, Douglas and the 8112 Studio crew (including director of photography and fellow Wonderful Machiner Bobby Bruderle) got to work on the pre-production,
Production was fairly intense. Aside from hiring crew and getting all the gear we needed to rent, I had to arrange for a process trailer for the first time in my career. This is essentially a flatbed trailer pulled by a truck. You put the hero vehicle with actor on the trailer and this allows you to put lights wherever you want, on or around the car. That’s how our interior shots look so well lit. To use the process trailer, we had to map our route for the New York permit office and arrange police escort. I also had to cast a little league team willing to take the day off from school, and find a baseball field that looked like the client’s storyboards where we could park the car right by the field with a view of New York in the background.

And then, three days before the shoot, Douglas got a call from Tier10 asking him to turn on the television,
Right before me was a clip of the star of our ad writhing in pain after tearing his ACL. Of course, we were devastated for Mariano’s sake because he’s a really great guy and an amazing player and that’s the worst way to end a career. We knew the shoot would be postponed, and possibly even cancelled. We sat for a few days biting our nails for Mariano’s sake as well as the sake of the entire campaign (two separate ads starring Mariano). Thankfully he’s a trooper, and with only three days notice before our new scheduled shoot, jumped back into action. That was a hectic week for sure, but it worked out!

But with so much planning and preparation, the shoot itself went smoothly. Using a RED Scarlet to film, they got everything they needed with relatively few hiccups throughout the day. Douglas enjoyed the shoot and found Mariano Rivera to be a “fantastic guy.” And, most importantly, the client was very happy with the final commercial, which will be initially featured on English and Spanish speaking TV stations in the New York area, but should eventually be followed by a national push along with web ads.
