Working in a creative field is a balancing act. Taking on easy projects can make you feel safe, but it’s the risky jobs that allow you to innovate and explore. The photo we selected for this month’s print promo—shot by Hong Kong-based photographer Gareth Brown—reminded me that you need to challenge yourself while still keeping on point.
Modern Postcard printed and delivered 2989 of these tiny dancers for us to creatives across North America. Gareth also provided me with some additional information about the chosen shot:
The image was taken as part of a project that I have been working on for a few years, “Bodies in Motion, Bodies at Rest.” It’s a site-specific dance exploration of Hong Kong, which explores themes of man’s relationship with environment.
The location is the Island Eastern Corridor Highway in North Point, a magnificent piece of infrastructure that rises out of Victoria Harbour. The highway serves to keep the traffic flowing in and out of HK. Whilst the location is close to shore, to get to the concrete stanchions we needed to take sampans.
For this segment, we were lucky enough to get the esteemed Hong Kong Ballet principal Faye Leung to collaborate with us. Faye’s brief was to give context to the strength of the structure and using her grace, agility and softness, she achieves this and more in the dawn light.
